Title: David Inquired of the Lord
( 1 Samuel 23: 1-18) When David was told , “Look, the philistines are fighting against Keilah and are looting the threshing floors “, he inquired of the Lord, “Shall I go and attack these Philistines?” And the Lord said to David, “Go and attack the Philistines and save Keilah.” But David's men said to him, “Behold, we are afraid here in Judah; how much more then if we go to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?” Then David inquired of the Lord again. And the Lord answered him, “Arise, go down to Keilah, for I will give the Philistines into your hand.” And David and his men went to Keilah and fought with the Philistines and brought away their livestock and struck them with a great blow. So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah. When Abiathar the son of Ahimelech had fled to David to Keilah, he had come down with an ephod in his hand.
Now it was told Saul that David had come to Keilah. And Saul said, “God has given him into my hand, for he has shut himself in by entering a town that has gates and bars.” And Saul summoned all the people to war, to go down to Keilah, to besiege David and his men. David knew that Saul was plotting harm against him. And he said to Abiathar the priest, “Bring the ephod here.” Then David said, “O Lord, the God of Israel, your servant has surely heard that Saul seeks to come to Keilah, to destroy the city on my account. Will the men of Keilah surrender me into his hand? Will Saul come down, as your servant has heard? O Lord, the God of Israel, please tell your servant.” And the Lord said, “He will come down.” Then David said, “Will the men of Keilah surrender me and my men into the hand of Saul?” And the Lord said, “They will surrender you.” Then David and his men, who were about six hundred, arose and departed from Keilah, and they went wherever they could go. When Saul was told that David had escaped from Keilah, he gave up the expedition. And David remained in the strongholds in the wilderness, in the hill country of the wilderness . And Saul sought him every day, but God did not give him into his hand. Saul Pursues DavidDavid saw that Saul had come out to seek his life. David was in the wilderness of Ziph at Horesh. And Jonathan, Saul's son, rose and went to David at Horesh, and strengthened his hand in God. And he said to him, “Do not fear, for the hand of Saul my father shall not find you. You shall be king over Israel, and I shall be next to you. Saul my father also knows this.” And the two of them made a covenant before the Lord. David remained at Horesh, and Jonathan went home.
When David received a disturbing news , that the Philistines were fighting against Keilah and were looting the threshing floors, he inquired of the Lord, saying “Shall I go and attack those Philistines?”. By looting the threshing floors, the Philistines were robbing Keilah’s citizens of all their food supplies. Remember some of the history of David, he was the same David who fall into an adulterous affair with Bathsheba and murdered her husband to cover his sin. Despite the fact that he indulged himself into so many sins, he still answered a man after God’s heart.
He was a man who sought God’s face before he would take any action. When he received the troubling message , he did not take action against his enemies, but he first of all inquired of the Lord. He did not start calling for help, or start to complain to people about the problems, but he went to God in prayers. The most interesting thing about the whole thing was that , God answered him. All the time he sought the face of the Lord, God responded to him. ( Psalm 46:1-2) How many times do we seek the face of God before we try to tackle those challenges we see in our lives ? We always inquire of the Lord only when we have tried many things and fail, then we will bring it to the Lord.
David loved the Lord, we never heard any stories about him seeking other gods in time of trouble. He never brought foreign gods in the land of Isreal during his reign. He committed numerous sins, and would always acknowledge his sins before God and God unconditionally forgave him. He totally depended on God in everything he was doing . God is always ready to forgive our sins, He is always ready to hear our prayers, He is always ready to talk to us if we come to Him in faith. When David inquired of the Lord , God told him to go ahead. When we ask Him to direct us, He will be happy and He will show us the right way to go , and we will not make mistakes. (Proverbs 3:6) In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths.
God wants us to seek Him first in all we do. A lot of times we take actions without seeking God’s face in prayers. That business you want to start, have you sought the will of God in prayers ? That career you want to pursue, have you inquired of the Lord? That wife, husband you want to marry, have you prayed about it, ? Anything you want to do in life, seek God’s face first, He knows the end from the beginning, He knows the right thing for you. He knows how you are going to end up , so it will be appropriate to seek God first before you engage in anything in life. When you seek Him first , you can never go wrong. When you inquire of Him, listen and hear from Him, and when He talk to you please listen and it will be well with you. ( Matthew 6:33) But seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
David, was a man after God’s heart, despite all his sins, he was able to win God’s favor. How was that possible,? among all the kings in those days non of them worn God’s favor like David. He was the only king who repented from all his sins, not only repenting but with remorse. He also put God first in everything he did. God doesn’t like when we live in pride, selfishness, arrogance, idolatry etc, as much as God hates sin, he still said David was a man after His heart in that generation. It takes total repentance and personal encounter with Jesus to win the favor of God. May the Lord help us to win His favor in Jesus name.
Prayers: Oh God I repent for all my sins. Forgive me oh Lord. Help me to seek your face in all that I do. Please Lord let your face shine upon my life. Direct all my paths so that I will not stumble in Jesus name. My refuge and strength is in you oh! Lord. Help me Jesus.
