May 3, 2020 Methodist Daily Reflection :- Amend Your Ways
METHODIST DAILY REFLECTION
SUNDAY 3RD MAY, 2020
THEME: Amend Your Ways
PASSAGE: Matthew 3:1-12
John the Baptist started his ministry with special emphasis on repentance. He warned the people to turn from their evil ways, for the kingdom of God is at hand. He also informed them of the coming of a more powerful man than him, who would turn everything around.
Repentance in our context is a complete turn-around from doing evil to doing good. It is total turning away from rebellion against God and His Word and becoming His obedient child. It is saying bye to lying, cheating, stealing, taking revenge, adultery, bearing false witness and other evils.
John was remarkably different from other preachers and leaders of his day. While many were greedy, selfish and preoccupied with winning the praise of the people just like we have many of such so-called "Men of God" today, John was only concerned with the praise of God.
Some people came out to hear this simple man who wore strange clothes and ate strange food. Some came out of curiosity but ended up repenting of their sins as they listened to his powerful message.
The same message is still being preached today, 'Repent, for the Kingdom of God is at hand;' John attracted so many people and He was daring as a Preacher. He did not spare his audience, including Herod and religious leaders, but urged them to repent of their sins. When you wash dirty hands or clothes the results are immediately visible, but true repentance comes from your heart, which only the all-knowing God can see or decipher. It is not outward show only.
As a sinner before God, are you truly ready to amend your ways and make that your crooked path straight? A changed life with new and Christ-like behaviour makes your repentance real and visible.
