TOPIC - THE SEED OR THE SOIL?
Read: Matthew 13:3-23
MEMORISE: But others felon good ground and yielded a crop: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty (Matthew 13:8).
EXPOSITION
A good farmer needs not be told how crucial the seed and soil are for bountiful harvest. While the seed must be good, uninfected, viable and reliable, the soil in which the seed would be planted is expected, among other things, to be fertile, nourishing and suitable for the type and nature of the seed to be planted. This underscores the reason why farmers preserve their seeds properly and also ensure that the soil is not impoverished. When the harvest’s yields are below the farmer’s expectation, attention cannot but be focused on the soil.
The word of God is good and perfect seed being sown in the hearts of individuals who constitute the soil (vv. 6-8). The sowing comes in form of preaching, teaching, gospel musicals/videos, etc. unfortunately, it has been variously discovered that less desirable results have been coming from our much talked about sermons, musicals, dramas, evangelism, gospel crusades and revivals! This has made many to believe that the ministers of the word are having faults, but we pay less attention to the stony, hardened, stubborn and recalcitrant hearts of the listeners or hearers.
This scenario therefore calls for proper follow up after dishing out the word. This builds up on the word that has been dished out. The word of God is very powerful but the fallowed ground must be properly tilled before it can grow and bring desirable harvest. The place of prayer cannot be overemphasized in doing this. The hearts of those we give the word through whatever means – evangelism and missions- should be committed to the lord in prayers, from time to time, to make such more favourably disposed to and receptive of the word.
In like manner is the place of the life of the personal life of the evangelist, where the message is different from the life of the messenger, the message wouldn’t be anything better than Elisha’s staff in the hand of Gehazi, we must ensure that our lives preach the gospel more than mere words (2Tim. 4:12). These have helped so many evangelists and missionaries.

PRAYER POINTS
1. Lord, give me the boldness and the wisdom to rightly divide Your Word for salvation and edification, as the case may be.
2. Lord, as I share Your Word with sinners, let Your Spirit make their hearts totally receptive to the Word.
3. Lord, grant more opportunities for evangelism and missions to Your Church in the land, and let us be more committed and selfless in making the most of these opportunities.
