C.A.C SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON. UNIT II: MAN'S LOVE TOWARD MAN. October 14, 2018 : LESSON SEVEN LOVE ACTIONS WITH RESPECT TO DAVID

--> Note :- Are you born again? You are never going to win the battle against the devil if you are not born again. I plead with you to give your life to Jesus today because the longer you stay in sin and remain unsaved, the more hardened your nature becomes against the purpose and the way God wants you to be for His purpose. To give your life to Jesus now, say this prayer: “Father, I come to You in the name of Jesus. I know that I am a sinner and I cannot save myself but Jesus died for me and shed His blood that I might be saved. Today, I accept Jesus as my Lord and Saviour. Jesus, I ask You to come into my heart, be my Lord, wash me with Your blood and make me whole. I believe with my heart and confess with my mouth that Jesus is my Lord. Thank You for saving me. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.” I congratulate you and welcome you to the family of God if you have sincerely said that prayer. Now you are fit to discover, know and walk in your destiny. LESSON SEVEN
LOVE ACTIONS WITH RESPECT TO DAVID.

Jonathan so loved David with the Agape, not the homosexual love. David showed the same in before them (I Samuel 18:16).

BRIEF COMMENT
What we have just in the memory scripture is about the affection of the entire people of Israel for David, a young man whom God had used to destroy a giant, who stood as God's enemy. David was used by God to lift the reproach of God's people and deliver the army of God. This was a noblest achievement, which even the enthroned king could not dare, due to his spiritual derailment.

Their joint love for David was worthy and godly. It is like trying to show appreciation to your benefactor. David was a true anointed champion of God. That David killed Goliath would not have been the only reason for the love the entire Israel and Judah had for him. It goes beyond that. Even after the glorious victory, the young warlord continued to make himself useful and indispensable in the king's service and for the entire nation of Israel. Where we read gave the condition for their love for him "because he went our and came in before them". This talks about his usefulness and relevance. David continued to make himself very very committed to service, reliable, and sensible. This plus the anointing, favour, and love of God endeared him to the people.

Also, his love and loyalty for God and to the people, and especially to the king who made himself his automatic enemy was commendable. The people appreciated how he continued to defend their courses, even when it was mostly risky ---- a lifestyle that was already part of him since he was a shepherd boy. No wonder the exaltation and the affliction he enjoyed.

Today, we also have work to do, if we must become acceptable to God and appreciated by fellow human beings. To win the hearts of people, we must love and see them as God loves and sees them. Do you believe in and love people? If you don't, you can't win them and you can't make God happy either. May God help us to make amends in Jesus' name. Amen.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
1.    To be great in life, you must be able to show God's love to everyone around you and leave the rest to God.
2.    Love is very great and powerful. Loving everyone as God loves them brings one into real greatness and makes one a true son of God.

AIM: This lesson aims at revealing to us how the power of love made David the great man that God purposed him to be.

OBJECTIVES: At the end of this lesson, learners would have:
i.     been able to explain how love assisted David to reach his goal in life;
ii.    appreciated the importance of loving people for the right reasons and be able to mark "X" homosexual love and other insincere love;
iii.   Known that true love doesn't seek evil for its enemies, but prays for its persecutors and forgives its offenders; and
iv.   understood that fairness, equity, justice, sharing and caring, etc. are characteristics of godly loves as shown by David.

INTRODUCTION
TEXTUAL SOURCE: 1 SAMUEL 18:1-4; 19:1-7; 20:1FF; 30:21-31; 2 SAMUEL 1:1-16; 18:19FF; 15:13-22
Glory, honour and adoration be unto God for yet another wonderful opportunity to encounter His powerful and life-transforming Word, through the instrumentality of the Sunday School. All the blessings that have accrued to us through these wonderful doses of the Sunday School shall continue to nourish our lives till eternity in Jesus' name.

Last week, we looked at Love In Actions With Respect To Moses. We saw how he was cared for. And in the second division, we discussed how he too reciprocated the kind gesture by loving God's people and work, genuinely.

Today's lesson is the seventh in the series, and is titled, Love In Actions With Respect To David. Two important things shall be examined here: how David enjoyed being loved by the likes of Jonathan, Michal his heartthrob, and his good friend, Ittai. The second thing that will draw our attention is David's demonstration of love to even the undeserving ones. What a wonderful character disposition!

May the Lord help us to, at all cost, imbibe the attitude of showing love to both the lovable and those who deserve not to be loved, in Jesus' name. Amen.

INTRODUCTION TO EACH DIVISION
This lesson is divided into two sections, I and II, with a further division into A and B respectively.

DIVISION I: LOVE ACTIONS TO DAVID
This division discusses the affection that David enjoyed from the likes of Jonathan, Ittai and some other people, even the entire Israel both as a young warrior and as a reigning but embattled king. It talks about how all these people loved David for the right reasons, especially how they all allowed the love of God to permeate their hearts for the betterment and the fulfillment of God's purpose in the life of this anointed of God, David.

DIVISION II: LOVE ACTIONS BY DAVID
This is the second division and it is basically on how David reciprocated all the love and affection he enjoyed. This section point out the selflessness, integrity and large-heartedness of David. He allowed God's love to rule his heart. His bowel of mercy was never shut even against the undeserving. We shall learn about how he demonstrated some level of equity and shunned partiality as he shared booties among his men with consideration and fairness and even with men outside his camp. Two, we shall see how he refused to be happy at the death of his enemies, rather, he lamented and seriously mourned his arch enemy, Saul, and his rebellious and throne-hijacking son, Absalom.

LESSON OUTLINE
I.    LOVE ACTIONS TO DAVID
A.  JONATHAN LOVED DAVID RIGHTLY.
B.   ITTAI'S LOVE FOR DAVID

II.   LOVE ACTIONS BY DAVID
A.   SHARED BOOTIES WITH ALL
B.   MOURNED HIS ENEMIES' DEATH

LESSON EXPOSITION
14th October 2018 |  I.   LOVE ACTIONS TO DAVID (1 Samuel 18:1-4; 19:1-7; 20:1ff; 2 Samuel 15:13-22).
Love action talks about being a recipient of something. David received and enjoyed the love of God by God and some other people, including Hiram (1 Kings 5:1). The believers too are beneficiaries of the love, mere y and grace of God through Jesus Christ our Lord. It is the love of God alone, that makes it possible for us to love others.

A.    JONATHAN LOVED DAVID RIGHTLY (1 Sam. 18:1-4; 19:1-7; 20:1ff)
Now when he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul (1 Sam. 18:1).
i.    v. 18:1: True love originates from God (1 Jn. 4:7-10). On the spot, God caused the soul of Jonathan to be knitted to David's
ii.   vv. 3-4: from that moment, the relationship between Jonathan and David became so cordial that it was said, he loved him as his own soul, even bequeathing his choice personal belongings to David in covenant. True love gives sincerely.
iii.  19:1-3: Jonathan's love for David made him to warn against his own father's plot. True love is neither harmful nor selfish.
iv.  vv. 4-7: Instead of seeing David as a threat to his own enthronement that needed to be eliminated, Jonathan advocated for him before his own father, making the father see why he should stop plotting against him. That is true selfless love(1 Cor. 13).
v.   20:1ff: Jonathan facilitated David's escape as a proof of his loyalty to David, daring the cost of letting the king's enemy slip away (vv. 27:-33). He went as fast as going to encourage David in his hideout (23:16-18). Only true love could have motivated such actions.
vi.  We can't claim to be in love with God and His people when we have decided to show insincere love to Him and others. Therefore, let us all (jointly) say no to homosexuality and other insincere love.

B.    ITTAI'S LOVE FOR DAVID (2 Samuel 15:13-22)
But Ittai answered the king and said, "As the Lord lives, and as my lord the king lives, surely in whatever place my lord the king shall be, whether in death or life, even there also your servant will be" (2 Samuel 15:21).
i.   vv. 13-19: David was in great distress due to his own sin. He had to abdicate his throne for his own son. Then Ittai came on stage (v. 19).
ii.  v. 19: Ittai was one of those loving people that God put in David's life. He was a stranger, an exile, a Gittite; yet he wá loving (cf. Luke 10:25-37). He shouldn't have thought of fleeing with the embattled King, but for his love for David and his God.
iii.  vv. 19-21: David gave genuine reasons for Ittai to return home (vv. 19,20), but Ittai's insisted to go with David means a lot (v. 21). True love is never without commitment and loyalty (cf. Ruth 1:16-22). How sincere and committed are you to God and people you claim to love in Him?
iv.  v. 22: He readily backed his words up with an immediate and sincere action. True love is not in mere expression but in godly and God-glorifying actions (1 Jn. 3:18).
v.  People like Ittai are uncommon today. Deserters are everywhere today.
vi. Like Ittai, believers must prove their sincere love to God by staying glued to the true and only Vine, Jesus Christ. Deserters and backsliders, for the sake of the love of God, are welcome back to the Vine like the prodigal son.

LESSONS DERIVED
1.   We need to love people for the right reasons, not for selfish ones.
2.   True love is  characterised by commitment, responsibility and devotion to God and others.

WORK TO DO
Only godly love can Make you stay glued to your courses ---- relationship with God, marriage, friendship, etc. (Deut. 6:5, Lk. 10:27). Discuss.

SUGGESTED ANSWER TO WORK TO DO
i.   That is just the truth.
ii.  If not for love of God, how would people live together as husbands and wives for years till death do them apart? How would a naturally depraved man come to the knowledge of God through Jesus Christ, and serve Him for the rest of his life? How would two people remain in friendship for years without betrayal, denial and mistrust? Only God could have made that possible.
iii.  No wonder the scripture urges us to love (we should love God and man, our neighbours as ourselves, and husbands should love their wives), for love alone covers multitude of sin (1 Pet. 4:8), it overcomes hatred, vengeance, separation, offense, divorce, putting away (casting away) and all sort of all evil, and threats to human relationships (1 Jn. 4:18).
iv.  The occasion of the fall made man to be so depraved, godless and deficient to the extent that he couldn't maintain intimate relationship with God and close friendship with his fellow man, until God's love located him (John 3:16, 1 John. 4:10).
v.  So, that has really made it very difficult for man to love and continue to be in harmony and peaceful coexistence with his God and fellow human (Romans 2:23).
vi.  Only the love of God in, and through Jesus Christ makes it possible for man to love his God and fellow human being again.
vii. This is the only way to stay glued to our right courses of fellowship with God and love for man (neighbours: friends, in-law, spouses, brethren, parents, and children, etc. (Ephesians 5:21ff).
