contemporary time.

Introduction
John is about eight years old. He is very intelligent, inquisitive and ready to learn. He had asked many questions about the story of creation and the ability of one single person to create everything, both living and non-living. One evening, as John and his mother were busy working in the garden, he saw some birds hovering and some chirping in the trees. He stood in amazement trying to understand what they were saying and wondering who understands their language. After a while, he turned to his mother and asked, “Mummy, who created these birds and who understands their language?” Beaming with smile, his mother replied, “God is the Creator of everything in the universe, including the birds. She explained further that God understands their language and that their chirping is not mere noise but praise and worship unto God, their Creator.
The focus of today’s lesson is Psalm 100. It is a psalm of praise and thanksgiving to God who created humankind and takes care of His people. The psalm may have been sung by worshippers as they entered the temple for worship. It is one of the most popular psalms of praise being sung today by Christians.
THE LESSON EXPLAINED
A.A Command to Praise God Psalm 100:1-3
This psalm is one of the praise psalms written by King David in acknowledgment that the Lord is God. It is a command and invitation to God’s people to sing to the Lord, to worship Him with joy and come before Him with joyful songs. The reason for the command to sing joyful songs to God is stated in verse 3. He said, “Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.” The phrase ‘The Lord is God’ is the basic creed of the Hebrew faith (Deuteronomy 6:4) and it implies that YAHWEH, the God of Israel, is the true and living God. Of course, the claim that God made us and we belong to Him is in connection with the people of lsrael who become God’s people ds they deported the land of Egypt and particularly at Mount Sindi when God promised to be their God (Deuteronomy 7:1-11). David’s invitation to all people of the world to sing songs of praise in acknowledgment of God as the ultimate reality and ruler of the universe is for all believers in Christ. He has the ownership of the world and everything in it (Psalm 24:1) because He credted it. Therefore, He is to be hailed as the sovereign ruler with joyful shouts by all creation. The major challenge in the lesson is that Christians should cultivate the habit of singing praises to God in acknowledgment of the fact that it is He who made us and not we ourselves. He is our God, our Maker and Sustainer and so, we have become His people. Similarly, verses 6 and 7 of Psalm 95 echo the need to worship and praise God’s sovereignty over the whole earth. He is our Maker and God. We are admonished to
praise and give Him thanks always with songs of praise
and with modern instruments that are pleasing in the sight of God.
Discussion Time 1
1. With many so-called gospel songs today, how can we identify songs that glorify God?
2. Ask the members to sing some songs of praise to God.
B. God’s Faithfulness Emphasised Psalm 100:4-5
One of the attributes of God is faithfulness, which is known throughout all generations. In His admonition to worship and sing a hymn of praise to God because He is God, the
psalmist further encouraged his readers to enter the temple gates with thanksgiving and go into its courts with praise. It was repeated, “Give thanks to him and praise his name.” The reason for the repetition to give thanks to God and praise Him is clearly stated in verse 5. He said:
▪︎ The Lord is good. It is God’s nature to be good. As it is used in the passage, God’s goodness is the same as being blameless, noble and morally upright. Interestingly, the goodness of God extends to all generations because He causes even the wicked to enjoy the sunshine, rain and other daily blessings.
▪︎ God’s love is eternal: God’s love toward humankind is everlasting and unending. This is repeatedly emphasised in Psalm 136, when the psalmist extols the wonders of God in creation and how God freed the Hebrews from slavery in Egypt. He led them safely through the Red Sea (Exodus 12:29-42) until they finally settled in the Promised Land.
▪︎ God’s faithfulness lasts forever: One of the qualities that distinguish Yahweh from other kings is His steadfast love and faithfulness. It is a covenant-based love that endures, despite the lapses on the part of His people (Psalm 89:3). Throughout the history of Israel, God showed them His constant steadfast love and kindness.
God is faithful to all humankind, even those who do not trust in Him. His faithfulness is from everlasting to everlasting. This implies that God is not partial and He does not Change. He is constant in His relationshi with His people by showing us undeserved fdvour, mercy and kindness. The only way we can respond to this great love is to constantly worship and praise Him with songs, dancing and every kind of musical instruments available to us.
Discussion Time 2
i. Compare God’s faithfulness with that of humans. State at least seven differences.
2. What should be humankind’s response to God’s faithfulness?

ii. Set aside about 5 minutes of praise to God and Sing Baptist Hymnal 491 “Now Thank We All Our God”.
