STOP CALLING YOURSELF WHAT YOU AREN'T.
Read Revelation 3:1-6
MEMORISE: And to the angel of the church in Sardis write, ' These things says He who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars: "I know your works, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead" (Revelation 3:1)
EXPOSITION
The industries of jewelleries, tie and dye, textiles etc, had made Sardis an important commercial city, a well geographically situated city with a trade route that ran East and west through the kingdom of Lydia. Religiously, it was a centre of pagan worship and site of a temple of Artemis, or Diana. When addressing the Church in Sardis, Jesus described Himself as He who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars (Rev. 3:1), representing the seven pastors/overseers of the seven churches in Asia. They are in His hands; He knows them inside and out. He knows what people say about them and what they truly are.
A church situated in a such a wealth city as Sardis must be wealth too. The members of the church would most certainly be elites. It is unlikely that the pastors of such a church would sweat over tithes and offerings! It is possible for their members to either hold political offices, or have connections with the people in power and the 'who is who' in the society. The church had a reputation for being numerically thriving, financially buoyant, but wrongfully reputed for being spiritually healthy and effective among her contemporaries! However, Jesus stripped her of the reputation of being alive, and declared her "dead"!.
On a personal level, what do you think is your reputation among your family members, co- workers, neighbours, associate church members? Is your reputation misleading? Are your clothes soiled somehow? Are you truly what people claim you are? Remember, the One who holds the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars knows you inside out! It is great disservice to yourself (Self-Injury) to be calling yourself what you aren't. On this year's Self-Injury Awareness Day, continue remembering that you cannot hide from the Omniscient God. It is how He sees and assesses you that matters than how you are assessed by people, or yourself.
PRAYER POINTS:
1. Appreciate the fact that God knows you more than you can understand. He is the Omniscient.
2. Take a moment to confess who you really are to the Lord, and those areas that you have tried to cover up who you actually are from people.
3. Ask God to rebuke the spirit of hypocrisy and pretence in our different campus fellowships everywhere.
