Read: Matthew 4:18-20
[18]And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.[19]And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.[20]And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.
MEMORISE: _Then He said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men_ (Matthew 4:19).
EXPOSITION
A wide range of answers are always given to the question of being a follower of Jesus Christ. Many think engaging in certain religious activities is equivalent to following Jesus. Although these activities are generally practiced by Christians, not everyone who does them is a Christian. To determine if we are truly following Jesus, we must use biblical guidelines such as.
1 Born Again (Jn. 3:13). This is the first qualification to become a follower of Jesus.
2 Prayer (Lk. 6:12). If we follow Jesus, we will be a person of prayer just as He was.
3 Listening (Matt. 17:5). Only those who regularly listen to Him through various channels by which He releases His Word to us, can enjoy His blessings unstoppably.
4 Belief (Jn. 3:16). Redemption is the gift of God. The beauty of the gift is in the reception. God expects everyone to personally accept the gift – accept Jesus as personal Lord and Saviour. That is salvation.
5 Obedience (Jn.8:12). Following requires obedience.
6 Love (Mk. 12:30). We cannot follow Christ with a divided heart.
7 Sharing (Matt. 28:19). This is Jesus’ command, and if we are going to follow Him, we will share the truth of God’s Word with both friends and foes.
8 Service (Jn. 12:26). Jesus came as a servant, and as His followers, that is what we should do as well.
9 Suffering (Phil. 1:29). We should be ready to suffer for His sake and for the sake of the Gospel.
All these practices are essential elements of our walk with Jesus and should become an important part of our lives as we follow Him.
PRAYER POINTS
1. Every biblical principle that is too difficult for me to follows, I receive grace to practice them today, in Jesus’ name.
2. Lord, meet with all pretenders in our churches all over the world today, so that they can follow You rightly.
3. Lord, the grace to practice all the essential elements, to walk truly with You, endow me, today.
