Read: 1 Samuel 1:24-28’ 2:18-21
[24]And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bullocks, and one ephah of flour, and a bottle of wine, and brought him unto the house of the LORD in Shiloh: and the child was young.[25]And they slew a bullock, and brought the child to Eli.[26]And she said, Oh my lord, as thy soul liveth, my lord, I am the woman that stood by thee here, praying unto the LORD.[27]For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him:[28]Therefore also I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the LORD. And he worshipped the LORD there.
1 Samuel 2:18-21
[18]But Samuel ministered before the LORD, being a child, girded with a linen ephod.[19]Moreover his mother made him a little coat, and brought it to him from year to year, when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.[20]And Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife, and said, The LORD give thee seed of this woman for the loan which is lent to the LORD. And they went unto their own home.[21]And the LORD visited Hannah, so that she conceived, and bare three sons and two daughters. And the child Samuel grew before the LORD.
MEMORISE: And the LORD visited Hannah, so that she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile the child Samuel grew before the Lord_ (1 Samuel 2:21).
EXPOSITION
Today is International Women’s Day. And as such, women related discourse is relevant. Naturally, when palms are closed, nothing can come into them, but when they are fully opened, they get hold of things. More so, there is a familiar saying, _“A child who raises his arms is willing to be carried by the mother.”_ Many are yet to come to terms with being willing givers. Despite knowing that, “Givers never lack,” some still continue to heap up riches, not knowing who will have them. *(Psalm 39:6).*
Hannah, according to our golden text, timely redeemed her vow unto God by releasing Samuel wholeheartedly. What a godly woman! To a person after mundane things of this world, this might be termed, _“folly”_ or _“insanity”_ People would have never expected her to ‘ lose’ Samuel because of a vow since she had long been a barren woman! This is a typical thought of a stingy or miserly fellow! What if God had not given the one in the first place *(Gen. 22:1-14).
A child is given beans cake, he feels on the top of the world. Ask him to release it for honey; he will willingly throw away the beans cake! God has given you one; why holding tight unnecessarily to it? Do you know why He asks you to release that only one? He wants to give you more than that. Abraham released his only Isaac from his heart. In fact, he had already “killed Isaac in his heart before divine intervention. This only happened after he had allowed God’s interruption.
Hannah let Samuel go. She gave him onto the Lord as she had vowed. God in turn released five children to replace the one she had sacrificed (1 Sam. 2:21). That is the lot of a person who always opens his hands. Be wise to be liberal. Stay blessed.
PRAYER POINTS
1. Lord, forgive me the debt of not fulfilling my vows before You.
2. Lord, help me to live by my confession and surrender my life to You, including my belongings.
3. Oh Lord, help our leaders to know how to give back to the society and not always taxing them.
