TOPIC - GOD’S VERDICT AND MERCY
Read: 1 Kings 21:16-29
MEMORISE:
If My people who are called by My
name will humble themselves, and pray and seek
My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I
will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin
and heal their land (2 Chronicles 7:14).
EXPOSITION
King Ahab was the seventh king of Israel since
Jeroboam 1. He was the husband of the evil
Queen Jezebel. Ahab was a wicked king who did
more evil in the eyes of the lord thanpp his
predecessors Ppp(1Kgs. 16:30). God was not
pleased with his rule.
Ahab was angry with Naboth for his refusal to
sell his vineyard to him, and this led to the plot
by Jezebel that snuffed life out of Naboth,
unjustly. The righteous God who sees all things,
sent prophet Elijah to Ahab to declare His verdict
on him for the evil did. But his self-humbling,
self-effacing posture/disposition under the
sentence passed upon him made him obtain
pardon from God. God took notice of this and
repented of the proclamation. He said the evil
would not happen in his days(v. 29).
Similarly, God sent Prophet Jonah (1:2) to
Nineveh to declare His verdict on them, if they
failed to repent. When the people heard the
verdict, they humbled themselves, rented their
cloths, and even fasted. God cancelled the
judgement He had proclaimed on them (3:10).
The examples of above are unlike the young
prophet in 1 king 13:20-24, who neither sought
for mercy nor showed any sign of remorsefulness,
and so the evil came upon him. Brethren, it is a
great and terrible thing to fall victim of God’s
wrath (Heb. 10:31). Will you ask for, and receive
His MERCY today (Jam. 2:13)? Meanwhile, it is
only for those who are ready to forsake their sins
(Rom.6:1).
PRAYER POINTS
1. Father, I ask for the grace to live my life for
You, acknowledging that it belongs to You.
2. Lord, grant sinners true hearts of repentance,
so that they will not perish in their sins.
3. Lord, give our leaders (political, traditional and
religious) the hearts to seek You and forsake all
forms of evil.
