TOPIC: A SON WELCOMES REPROOF
Read: Hebrews 12:1-11
1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of
witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us,
and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was
set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right
hand of the throne of God.
3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest
ye be wearied and faint in your minds.
4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.
5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children,
My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art
rebuked of him:
6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he
receiveth.
7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he
whom the father chasteneth not?
8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye
bastards, and not sons.
9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave
them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of
spirits, and live?
10 For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for
our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.
11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous:
nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them
which are exercised thereby.
MEMORISE
Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful;
nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who
have been trained by it (Hebrews 12:11).
EXPOSITION
Nothing goes for nothing in life. Everything that is worthwhile definitely has price
tagged in it. It costs a serious minded athlete regular training, abstinence from
certain nutrition, regular gymnastics and other related routines to reach the peaks
of athletic career. All other vocations as well have their prices. If you want to claim
the prize; you must be more than ready to pay the price!
Everyone who believes in the name of Jesus Christ as God’s only begotten Son
becomes His disciple automatically, by following His footsteps in all ramifications
(Acts 11:26). By following the Master, you will discover that the your life style,
choice, taste and general disposition are affected. How? Others may, you cannot!
This clearly means that others may have inordinate taste and ambition… but you
can’t do same as a disciple of Christ.
While many others can freely fight, abuse and curse, God’s servant, a disciple of
Christ cannot (2 Tim. 2:5). For one to be different does not only rest in prayer and
fasting, rather, discipline must go with it. If you claim to be Jesus’ disciple but are
avaricious (gluttonous), talkative, oversleeping and engaging in other form of
excessiveness, you are not disciplined! All these must be cut off, if you are truly a
follower of Jesus. What of malice, anger, rebellion, strife, vain glory, pride and the
likes? They all bother on indiscipline and every disciple must eschew them.
Having difficulty with any of these? Submit totally; go back to Calvary, for genuine
salvation, sanctification and restoration; you will receive grace and mercy (Heb.
4:15,16).
PRAYER POINTS
1. Father, help me to be a disciplined disciple of Yours.
2. Lord, please continue to train me so that I can become a noble vessel fit for
Your use.
3. Pray that God should visit our church choirs to stop the antics and operations of
the devil among them at all levels
