Wednesday, September 19, 2018 - The Jewish Day of Atonement
TOPIC: THE FINISHED WORK OF CHRIST (I)
Read: John 19:30
MEMORISE: So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit (John 19:30).
EXPOSITION
On the Jewish calendar, today is the Day of Atonement which they call “Yom Kippor”. It is a day when the priest goes into God’s presence to seek His favour and mercy for His people, the entire Israelite nation in a very special way. It is a pointer to the finisher work of Christ on Calvary, hence our Living Water dose today.
While on the cross, at some point, Jesus said, it is finished, then He bowed His head and gave up His spirit (John 19:30). What did Jesus mean? What did He finish? Peter preached to the crowd in Acts 2 and told them, whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved (v. 21) and he also said, God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ (v. 36). In 3:19, Peter said, Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord. And in 3:26, he said, To you first, God, having raised up His Servant Jesus, sent Him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from your iniquities.
Clearly, the work Jesus finished on the cross is the work of redeeming us from our sins, so that we may be saved (2 Cor. 5:21). On the cross of Calvary, Jesus took our sins upon Himself so that those who believe may become the righteousness of God. When we come before God to pray or worship, when we come before His throne of grace, though we are sinners, the Father looks at us, and sees in us the perfection and the righteousness of Christ. This is the grace of God.
Yet at the same time, God requires us to stop sinning. Paul tells us in Romans 6:1-2: What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?
As you begin your walk with God today, give thanks for the grace of God and the righteousness of Christ. Let your gratitude move you to sin no more. Do have a great day!
PRAYER POINTS
1. Thank you so much Lord Jesus for starting and perfectly completing the work of my redemption.
2. Lord, deliver me from the grip of sin that wants to nullify Your finished work of salvation over my life.
3. Lord Jesus, please deliver new converts and young Christian from wrong teachings and heresies.
