Read Daniel 1:1,2,23
MEMORISE
But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the King's delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. (Daniel 1:8)
EXPOSITION
Why would Daniel think it was defilement to eat of the king's food and drink of his wine? Of course, it was due to Daniel's faithfulness to his knowledge of God's laws on food that he might have had before being taken captive to Babylon, and the fact that he knew that the Babylonians would have no reservations of serving unclean animals as well as food offered to idols.
Daniel and his three friends desired to preserve a sense of loyalty to God without indulging in the fellowship of the king, damning the high risks involved (v10-14). They wanted vegetables and water to remind themselves that they are the children of God, and not loyalists of Nebuchadnezzar. As evidenced in the later chapters of the book of Daniel, it is more than a matter of food laws, but allegiance to the only King of all Kings.
Daniel's loyalty to God in a hostile environment should challenge us to question our own loyalty, today, to Him. Have we been as loyal to the King as divinely expected? Or are we more loyal to the things provided by the prince of this world? If we say that we are loyal to the King, then how are our lives reflecting such loyalty? Are we not actually more loyal to ourselves than to Jesus Christ?
Peradventure you find yourself in a fellowship of people who are powerful and wealthy but are morally corrupt, would you remain in the fellowship to really witness the Gospel to them? Anyway, we need to pray that in the midst of doing so,we stay strong in the Lord to resist the subtle but powerful temptations they might offer. Or are we really deceiving ourselves, the truth being that we want to get more resources from these people?
The heart is deceitful but the Word of God is crystal clear. May the Lord help us to choose wisely and be honest to God and with ourselves.
PRAYER POINTS
1. Lord, help me to stay loyal to You even in the midst of temptations and challenges that are ever so present in this world.
2. Lord, make me sensitive and loyal to You even when it seems extremely difficult to do so.
3. Lord, cause Christians to be loyal to You in their work and marketplaces, regardless of the ungodly pressures around them.
