TOPIC: DESPISE AND GET DEPRIVED!
Read: 1 Corinthians 1:18-31
18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.
20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?
21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.
22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:
23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;
24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.
25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
26 For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:
27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;
28 And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:
29 That no flesh should glory in his presence.
30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:
31 That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.
MEMORISE:
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God *(1 Corinthians 1:18).
EXPOSITION
Despise” according to the Advance Learners’ dictionary means to dislike and disrespect somebody or something, while “deprive” means to be denied of something that one should have access to.
The Gospel as a whole should be warmly embraced and accepted by all and sundry *(Jn. 3:16).* God’s plan for the redemption of man lies in the Gospel. And what is the Gospel? It is all about the incarnation, birth, ministry, trial, death, resurrection, ascension, and the advent of Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God.
The Gospel, also known as the good news (because, the world never had any good news since the fall from grace in the garden), is full, free and for all *(Jn. 3:16).* However, as free and full as the Gospel is, many are still out there despising, forsaking and rejecting it *(1 Cor. 1:18).* Hope you are not one?
Because the Gospel is not enforced, rather, it is offered, majority are taking chances with it *(Jn. 3:18).* They take it for granted. Some treat it with contempt because there is no immediate sanction. So they think. The fact that there is no enforcement in accepting the gospel makes many to despise it.
No reason is genuine enough or sufficient to reject this divine Gift to human race. As a matter of fact, those who despise the gospel dig their own graves on the last day. The embodiment of the gospel that people despise today, will stand to judge them on the last day. It is better to embrace, accept and follow the gospel today and always in order to avoid being deprived at the time that matters most in any man or woman’s history *(Heb. 2:1-3).
PRAYER POINTS
1. Lord, give me victory over the satanic spirit that despises Your Word in any form.
2. Lord, deliver youths in our tertiary institutions, other organizations, and the entire society from the danger of despising the gospel that is leading them into cultism and other social vices.
3. Lord, empower the gospel message on the lips of evangelists and missionaries at all levels sharing them in different places.
