August 19, 2018 C.A.C SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON UNIT I: MAN'S LOVE TOWARD GOD, LESSON THREE : TOPIC - JOSIAH'S LOVE FOR GOD

--> Note :- Are you born again? You are never going to win the battle against the devil if you are not born again. I plead with you to give your life to Jesus today because the longer you stay in sin and remain unsaved, the more hardened your nature becomes against the purpose and the way God wants you to be for His purpose. To give your life to Jesus now, say this prayer: “Father, I come to You in the name of Jesus. I know that I am a sinner and I cannot save myself but Jesus died for me and shed His blood that I might be saved. Today, I accept Jesus as my Lord and Saviour. Jesus, I ask You to come into my heart, be my Lord, wash me with Your blood and make me whole. I believe with my heart and confess with my mouth that Jesus is my Lord. Thank You for saving me. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.” I congratulate you and welcome you to the family of God if you have sincerely said that prayer. Now you are fit to discover, know and walk in your destiny. C.A.C SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON
UNIT I: MAN'S LOVE TOWARD GOD.
August 19, 2018.

LESSON THREE.
JOSIAH'S LOVE FOR GOD

King Josiah's burning passion for the Lord helped him to discover the abandoned Law of the Lord, and destroyed idol worshipping, in his own time. Are you passionately in love with Christ?

MEMORY SCRIPTURE
Now before him there was no king like him, who turned to the Lord with all his heart, with all his soul, and with all his might, according to all the Law of Moses; nor after him did any arise like him (2 Kings 23:25).

BRIEF COMMENT
The evils that Manasseh and Amos (Josiah's grandfather and father respectively) promoted during their time as kings had taken deep root in the land and the people had failed to truly repent.

Josiah had loved God wholeheartedly in obedience to God's instruction in Deuteronomy 6:4-5). This love propelled him to really fight against idolatrous practices and other evils that pervade the land before his enthronement.

The Bible records that there was no king before and after him who turned to the Lord. This was because he fought more heresy and false worship than any other king. Including David who though, may have been more devoted to the Lord, but he did not have as much evil to contend with during his time.

More importantly, the book of the Law that was discovered and read both enlightened and inspired Josiah to do more for the Lord. The "Lord's Hall of Fame" for godly achievers is not yet filled up, there is room for you and I to get enlighten therein. Reaching for, reading, studying and applying the Word, is the key. Go for it.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
1.   Those who truly love the Lord should work hard to help others do same.
2.   They do that firstly through a commitment to God through personal consecration to practically obeying the injunction of the Scripture. They live for the gospel (John 4:34; I Cor. 2:2). It is therefore normal and easy for them to help others to follow suit, as a way of life.

AIL AND OBJECTIVES
AIM: This lesson is aimed at revealing the power of the Word and its effect for those who truly embrace it.

OBJECTIVES: At the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:
i.   explain Josiah's love and exploits for God since ascending the throne to the end of his reforms;
ii.  highlight Josiah's effort at understanding the Law and how he mobilized others to listen to it too;
iii. tell who Huldah the prophetess was and her role in Josiah's reformation; and
iv. have been better positioned to make a decision to be more committed to studying and obeying the Word of God.

INTRODUCTION
TEXTUAL SOURCE: I KINGS 13:1-2; 2 KINGS 22; 23:1-25.
We thank our God for the success of lesson two that was concluded last Sunday. It is believed that you are already applying the truths gleaned from that wonderful revelation of God's love. May you never grow weary of the Lord's teaching, in Jesus' name. Amen.

For today and next Sunday, we shall be studying "Josiah's Love for God", with a view to helping us see the power and beauty of God's Law/Word when approached and embraced with open heart.

Josiah is the main character of this lesson. He became king of Judah when he was barely eight years old. In those days, the people were practising sorcery and idolatry. When Josiah was 16 years old, he tried to learn how to worship God in the right way, and at 26 years of age, he arranged for the temple to be repaired.

In the temple, the high priest, Hilkiah, found the scroll of the Law of God. The king's secretary, Shaphan brought the scroll to Josiah and began to read the Law out loud. As Josiah listened, he realised that the people had been disobeying God for many years. Therefore, he sent and enquired from God what they should do, and God answered through Prophetess Huldah.

When King Josiah heard the message, he went to the temple, called the people of Judah together, and read the Law aloud to them. Josiah and the people promised to obey God with all their hearts. Josiah really loved and obeyed God and His Law wholeheartedly. God calls us to the same place. May we receive the grace to be willing, as we study through, in Jesus' name. Amen.
INTRODUCTION TO EACH DIVISION
This is a two-week lesson and is divided into I and II, with a further division of each into parts A and B.
DIVISION I: LOVED GOD PERSONALLY
This division discusses Josiah as a product of prophecy and as a king who obeyed God; not turning aside to the left or to the right but rather, walking in all the ways of David and doing rightly before God. He did not fail to fulfill prophecy because he wilfully humbled himself to do the biddings of God when he discovered the book of the Law. It is a division that awakens in us, the desire to fulfill destiny through the instrumentality of the Word.

DIVISION II: LED OTHERS TO DO SAME
This is the division that highlights and explains the reforms of Josiah. It identifies the processes that led to the discovery of the book of the Law, Josiah's repentance upon hearing the book read to him, his quest for counsel from the prophetess, Huldah, involvement of the people, restoration of the Passover and a public reading of the Law of God. This loaded for your revival and blessing.

LESSON OUTLINE
I.    LOVED GOD PERSONALLY
      A.   A PRODUCT OF PROPHECY.
      B.   A KING WHO OBEYED GOD.

II.   LED OTHERS TO DO SAME
      A.  RE-DISCOVERED THE WORD
      B.  RESTORED TRUE WORSHIP.

LESSON EXPOSITION
19th August, 2018 |  I.   LOVED GOD PERSONALLY (1  Kings 13:1-2; 2 Kings 22:1-2)
A personal knowledge of God through practical experience is the first step Toward loving the Lord. The love begins to grow gradually when one is under godly tutelage. That was the case with Josiah. Do you desire to love God more? Who mentors you, and with what, matter a lot in this regard.

A.    A PRODUCT OF PROPHECY (1 KGS. 13:1-2; 2 KGS. 22:1)
Josiah was eight years old when he became king (2 Kgs. 22:1).
i.      1 Kgs. 13:1-2: A man of God from Judah had specifically prophesied the coming of Josiah to defile the altar by burning on it the bones of the very priests who sacrificed on it. He gave a specific sign to back it up (v. 3)
ii.      God's Word doesn't go unfulfilled. At the appointed time, the prophesied Josiah came as the great grandson of King Hezekiah, and he fulfilled everything that said about him (2 Kgs. 21:24; 23:15-16).
iii.    2 Kgs. 22:1: This prophecy was declared almost 300 years before Josiah was born (1 Kgs. 13:2; 2 Kgs. 22:1,3,17-18). The name Josiah means, "The Lord supports." Prophetically, it implied that Josiah would enjoy God's full support to fulfill his God-given destiny (cf. Jer. 29:11; Zech. 4:6).
iv.    Prophecies from God's mouth cannot but be fulfilled. Remember the cases of Cyrus (2 Chr. 36:22-23; Isa. 44:28; 45:1) and the city of Bethlehem (Mic. 5:2). No matter how long it takes, all God-given prophecies concerning your life shall come to pass.
v.   Such prophecies will come to pass when you remain in the faith and live within the confines of God's word/instructions.

B.    A KING WHO OBEYED GOD (2 Kgs. 22:1-2)
And he did what was right in the sight of the Lord, and walked in all the ways of his father David; he did not turn aside to the right hand or to the left (v.2)
i.   Along with his great-grandfather, Hezekiah, Josiah ranks as one of the most important of all the kings of Judah (cf. 2 Kgs. 18:1-8). That he did what was right in the sight of the Lord implies that he loved and obeyed God.
ii.    He is compared to David in his whole devotion to the Lord, with the reputation that he didn't deviate from it. He wholly committed to obeying Yahweh's instructions enshrined in the Scriptures (cf. Deut. 5:32).
iii.    How remarkable it is that he chose not the evil paths of his father, Amon, and grandfather, Manasseh (2 Kgs. 21:1-7,19-22)! Most likely, his mother, Jedidah (meaning "beloved"; 2 Kgs. 22:1) was a pious woman, and her godly influence had helped him (cf. 2 Tim. 1:15). Obviously, the pious temple leaders and court advisors also helped him to overcome his wicked father's influence.
iv.    Most remarkably, his own concern for righteousness facilitated by his personal knowledge and appropriation of God's love helped him, despite encountering the violence, bloodshed, and revolution that characterized his father's brief reign. Sincere love for God through experiential knowledge helps one to obey God at any point in life.
v.    You have no excuse, whatever, not to love God. Do you really love Him? Show this by your actions.
vi.   You have a power to choose either to obey God or not; but the depth of your love for God would determine your choice.

LESSON DERIVED
1.    Whatever the Lord says will come to pass according to His own timing and loving-kindness, will surely be fulfilled.
2.    Obedience and love for God are choices; it pays best to willingly choose them.

WORK TO DO
Repentant and humble hearts often gain the attention of God. Discuss.

SUGGESTED ANSWER TO WORK TO DO
i.    Repentance from a humble heart is what God demands (Isa. 66:2).
ii.   A repentant heart would be drawn nearer to God because the sin of such would have been forgiven (James 4:6-10; I Jn. 1:9)
iii.  God will shower grace and mercy y on such (Joel 2:12-13).
iv.  God will attend to such and greatly refresh it (Acts 3:19).
v.   True repentance is dependent on the Word of God truly preached and appropriated.
vi.  Josiah heard the Word read to him, and he repented upon the revelation that attended the Word.
vii.  He became empowered through the Word to do God's will.
viii. He also led the people back to God by obeying His Word.
ix. These processes drew God's presence to His people once again.
