Read Romans 9:10-16
MEMORISE
As it is written, " Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated." (Romans 9:13)
EXPOSITION
The principle of God in the distribution of favours to one and denial of another is mysterious, unclear to many people, but not unfair as some erroneously believe. It was common among the Hebrews to use the terms "love" and "hatred" in comparative sense, where the former implies strong positive attachment, and the latter, not positive hatred, but merely a lesser love, or the withholding of the expressions of affection. Stop a while and read Genesis 29:30-31 to understand this element. Ponder on: He who spares his rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him promptly (Prov.13:24). No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other (Matt.6:24a). If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple (Lk.14:26).
This term "hate," as referenced above, and to Esau, does not mean any positive hatred toward him but that God had preferred Jacob, and had withheld from Esau those privileges and blessings which He had conferred on the posterity (future generations) of Jacob, as explained in Malachi 1:3. This has nothing to do with what they did or did not.
What conclusion shall we draw from these facts? Does God do injustice or wrong? God forbid! None amongst humans deserves His favour (Rom.3:23); yet, out God, according to His sovereign will and pleasure, exclusively pardons whom He pleases, and saves people on His own terms. This demonstrates His unquestionable benevolence (1 Pet. 2:9-10) bestowed upon all Christians for setting us apart for Him. Cherish and guard jealously, therefore, this unique favour of being exceedingly loved by God, for it is all by grace.
PRAYER POINTS
1. Appreciate God for the grace to be set apart unto Him in this world of waywardness.
2. Oh Lord my God, may Your grace never diminish in my life, any day, anytime.
3. Pray that God should give the Church in the land the understanding to appreciate the value God places on us, and live as such for Him always.
