TOPIC: NOT UNTO DEATH
Read: John 11:1-17
MEMORISE: _These things He said, and after that He said to them, "Our friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go that I may wake him up"_ (John 11:11).
EXPOSITION
Christ’s attitude toward Lazarus’ sickness, death, and eventual raising from the dead, speaks volume of divine timing. Why did Christ, a close friend of Lazarus and his family, decide to stay back two extra days at Bethabara (about 20 miles from Bethany) after hearing of his sickness. Why did He delay until Lazarus was dead before stepping into the situation? He was looking at the complete picture of God’s providence. He had hinted His disciples that, _This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it_ (John 11:4).
By the time Christ arrived Bethany, Lazarus had been in the grave for four days, stinking. To every other person, it was too late for any meaningful intervention, but to Christ, Lazarus was merely “asleep” and He was there to wake him up. He works with divine timing. When He eventually raised Lazarus back to life, the effect was marvelous: _Then many of the Jews who had come to Mary, and had seen the things Jesus did, believed in Him_ (John 11:45).
You may be facing a desperate situation that is akin to Lazarus’ sickness at the moment. Rest on Christ’s Word, “It is for the glory of God.” He will surely intervene in your situation. The omniscient God knows and sees everything. He will make everything work for His glory, and His glory alone, and in His own time that would pay you best *(cf. Eccl. 3:11). But remember, if God is behind the steering wheel of your life, you need not worry about road bumps and potholes!
PRAYER POINTS
1. My God, let all things work together for good in my life today and always.
2. Lord God, let Your glory emanate from what man had predicted to shame me, in Jesus’ name.
3. As I step out today, cover me with Your glory, oh Lord Jesus.
