TOPIC: GOD SEES YOU
Read: Genesis 16:7-13
MEMORISE: The Angel of the LORD said to her, "Return to your mistress, and submit yourself under her hand." (Genesis 16:9)
EXPOSITION
Imagine God placing His hand on your shoulder (physically), looks straight into your eyes, and tells you now: “I see you; I see you; I see what you are going through.” This is a mental picture of what Hagar experienced when she had a sudden glorious moment with God in the desert. You too can know God as El Roi, You-Are-the-God-Who-Sees (Gen. 16:13).
But just as people let us down, we do likewise to God and others. Sarai was disappointed in Hagar who, supposedly, was given to Abram, being unquestionably liked and trusted, nonetheless turned to be a despiser of her benefactor. Her hurried flight shows that it is awful and hurting to pay goodwill with evil. No wonder, Return angel of the LORD said to her (Hagar), “Return to your mistress (Sarai), and submit yourself to her authority”: Go back to your mistress and humble yourself under her authority” (Gen. 16:9; New American Standard Bible–Updated). Often our experience fall short of our expectations, and like a lover who has been wronged, we tend to guard our hearts against future disappointments by fleeing certain companies. But make no mistake about it, God sees it all. God understands and makes perfect His promises (Gen. 16:10-11).
The book of Hebrews tells us that we have a High Priest (Jesus Christ) who understands what we are going through. He “sympathises” with our weakness (Heb. 4:15). The word “sympathises” comes from two Greek words, smy and pathos, meaning, “suffer with.” Therefore, be assured this day that you’re not alone in your ordeals, whether it is caused by you or someone else. There are glorious moments to be found in the dark, if you will keep your eyes open, focusing on the Lord your God who sees you. Go to Him and obey His voice.
PRAYER POINTS
1. Here I come, oh Lord, create in me a humble heart to overcome my errors and humbly serve your purpose.
2. Deliver me, oh Lord, from dangerous influences that surround my life.
3. Lord, help the helpless who are caged under circumstances beyond their controls.
