PENTECOSTAL OR ‘PENTERASCAL’?
READ: Acts 2:1-13
1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven.
6 And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language.
7 Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Look, are not all these who speak Galileans?
8 And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born?
9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes,
11 Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.”
12 So they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “Whatever could this mean?”
13 Others mocking said, “They are full of new wine.”
MEMORISE:
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (Acts 2:4)
EXPOSITION
Yesterday was the celebration of the Pentecost, and we went through emphases on the indispensability of the Holy Spirit in our lives in every ramification.
Every race, language, setting or system does have its origin. Origin provides clear and intended purpose, plan and prerequisite of what such most represent always. “Pentecost,” which was from onset the Jewish ‘Feast of Harvest’, gained a better significance the day the promised Holy Spirit baptism took place on the 120 disciples in the upper room, waiting there in response to Christ’s instruction and in expectation of His promise (Acts 1:4-8). We can therefore say that the first Pentecostal Church started on that day, setting the standard for the other churches (branches) springing from it. Thus, any church that is not existing according to the Spirit-controlled order of the Acts of the Apostles, shouldn’t be called Pentecostal. Pentecost churches and Christians should wholesomely embrace the principles and practices of the earlier Apostles.
Unfortunately, we have many fake Pentecostal churches all over. Some claim to be Pentecostal all because they demonstrate gifts of the Spirit-speaking in tongues, interpretation, healing, etc. This is not the basic criteria of Pentecostalism. The fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:21-26) better defines the character of the Pentecostal than show of the vocal gifts that are being seriously ‘pirated’, today. Where these manifestations of the fruit of the Holy Spirit are absent, regardless of their highest claims to ownership of Pentecostalism, they are real spiritual rascals!
A church that fails to teach sound biblical doctrine to mould godly character in people, is not Pentecostal. No wonder we have so many ’penterascals.’ Our lifestyles in conformity to Christ’s standard is what distinguishes us as Pentecostals. How much are we giving room to the workings of the Holy Spirit on us, in our midst, and in our churches today? That is the standard of being Pentecostal.
PRAYER POINTS
1. Lord, help me to surrender totally to the leading of the Holy Spirit in every area of my life.
2. Holy Spirit, I tender my entire system to You; work upon me perfectly, so that I can work for, and with You effectively.
3. Pray for the revival of the Holy Spirit, as of old, in our churches; Tarry meetings should be restored I full force in our churches.
