It's What is on the Inside That Matters Most
Acts 10:34-35
Then Peter began to speak: "I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism but accepts men from every nation who fear him and do what is right."
Thoughts for Today:
What an incredible revelation this must have been for Peter -- after all the Old Testament is filled with God stating to the Jews, "You are my chosen people." Peter now understands that being God's people has nothing to do with a person's nationality but rather those "who fear Him and do what is right." Why is that so hard for us to understand -- God does not show favoritism -- it's what is on the inside that matters most?
If you knew you were going to meet Donald Trump today -- what would you do differently? Would you choose your clothes a little more carefully? Pay closer attention to your hair style? Think more about what you are going to say? What if instead you were going to meet a homeless man? Would you prepare in the same way? Whether we want to admit it or not we all show some degree of favoritism based on what we see on the outside of a person -- I am thankful that God does not show the same favoritism.
Questions to Ponder:
We all have a tendency to judge a person by what we see -- what is your first reaction to long hair, lots of tattoos, a leather vest, and boots? Peter now realizes that Jesus is for everyone and he immediately begins to apply this new information. If you were to do the same thing, what thoughts or attitudes about certain groups of people would you need to change? What could you do today to reach out to those that are different than you? How could you start to see people as God see's them?
