Son of Encouragement
Acts 9:26-28
"When he came to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he really was a disciple. But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. He told them how Saul on his journey had seen the Lord and that the Lord had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had preached fearlessly in the name of Jesus. So Saul stayed with them and moved about freely in Jerusalem, speaking boldly in the name of the Lord."
Thoughts for Today:
Saul left Damascus in a hurry, barely escaping with his life. He now returned to Jerusalem, the center of the Jewish faith, but he was once again in a really tough spot. He couldn't go back to old life -- his life as a Pharisee for he was a changed man; and the new Christians weren't accepting of him either because they didn't believe his conversion was real. What was he to do? Enter Barnabas. Barnabas took Saul before the Apostles and explained that Saul's conversion experience was the real thing. Barnabas took a risk -- he invested in getting to know Saul, then used his own personal credibility and support to validate that Saul was truly a believer.
In Orange County, California there are a group of godly Christian businessmen and women who call themselves The Barnabas Group. It is their mission to come along side of missionaries and ministry groups to provide support as well as resources. I think Barnabas, whose name means "son of encouragement", would be himself encouraged to know that his name has taken on such great meaning within our community.
Questions to Ponder:
Verse 28 tells us, "So Saul stayed with them and moved about freely in Jerusalem, speaking boldly in the name of the Lord." Saul was able to do what he was best at because Barnabas had made an investment and taken a risk. Who have been some of the people who have invested in you and become your greatest supporters/believers? Who have you believed in and supported? Is there someone right now who needs a little time investment from you? Who needs some encouragement and support? Will you make the phone call?
