I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and indeed, all is vanity and grasping for the wind.” Ecclesiastes 1:14 NKJV
The book of Proverbs was written at the beginning of Solomon’s reign as a king, Ecclesiastes was written at the end of his reign. You can tell the difference in the tone of each book. This verse is probably the theme of the whole book. Solomon is a man who had everything and is ending his life bitter. Nothing has satisfied his life as he walked away from the Lord. The man blessed with all the wisdom in the world had chosen self-fulfillment and was left empty. Nothing held any value to him.
We can end up in the same boat as Solomon if we chase after all the things the world tells us we need. We will be bitter and empty if all we do is focus on making ourself happy. The only thing that will satisfy our hungry souls is Jesus Christ. We can have fame, friends, and fortune and still be left searching for the true meaning of life. Devoting our life to worshipping Christ, loving others, and serving is where true happiness is.
