MYTHS AND FACTS ABOUT MARRIAGE (II)
Read: 2 Timothy 4:1-4
2 Timothy 4:1-4 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;
Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
MEMORISE:
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears they will heap up for themselves teachers (2 Timothy 4:3).
EXPOSITION
Yesterday, we began looking at what 'myth' indicates and most relevantly, how this has influenced the attitude of people to the marriage institution. This is so because so many people are no longer finding it convenient to make do with sound doctrine. The desire to hear what they want to hear - those things that won't benefit them an inch, hence the gathering to themselves fake, fable - preaching teachers who would tell them what they want to hear. May God save us. Amen.
We discussed three marriage myths yesterday. We shall be delving into two more today being International Day for the Elimination Of Violence Against Women, backed up with evidences that are verifiable.
Myth 4: Divorce ("I can put away my wife, I can separate from my husband, if I so wish"). Even from the least expected quarters, many walk away from their marriages. Divorce is vehemently hated, rejected and condemned by God (Mal. 2:16; Matt. 19:4-9). Who else should give us the most reliable injunction about marriage that the One (God) who instituted it? Only the manufacturer can best describe the essence of a product. You are not biblically permitted to leave your marriage! Otherwise, you and your offsprings may not enjoy the consequences of your flagrant violence of the scriptures. Who can survive that?.
Myth 5: "Women are inferior, insignificant, weak." Those who rely on this myth are men who treat their wives as slaves and second-hand citizens. In the Orients, women (wives) were only to be seen, never to be heard, hence the less recognition given women then, both at home and in the society. That doesn't represent God's mind, at all. The truth is that God makes wives helpmeets to their husbands. They are to be loved, cherished, and respected as the very bodies of their husbands (Eph. 5:25; I Pet. 3:7). Godly husbands don't treat their wives shabbily! Only brutes beat their wives; same with women who abuse, and even beat their husbands.
PRAYER POINTS:
1. Lord, remove from my heart the tendency for traces of love for divorce, in Jesus'name.
2. Lord Jesus, I am sorry for any area that I have been abusing, or have abused my spouse. Forgive me (Then, go ahead to ask for your spouse's forgiveness and reconciliation)
3. Pray that God should help homes where spousal abuse (on either side) is the order of the day.
