TOPIC -  Spiritual Discipline 
BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Psalm 68-69; Romans 8:1-21

The MESSAGE:
The kind of discipline that God wants from His children is not physical, but spiritual. Thus the practical biblical ways by which Christians pursue holiness can be referred to as spiritual disciplines. The spiritual disciplines are those personal and interpersonal activities given in the Bible by which believers in Jesus Christ can become godly, spirit-filled, gospel-centered and more Christ-like.
Specifically, these involve the daily intake of God’s word (Joshua 1:8), praying (1 Thessalonians 5:17); fasting (Isaiah 58:5); and worship (Psalm 96:9). The other interpersonal disciplines include fellowship with the brethren, serving in the church and in the community; taking the Lord’s Supper, etc.
Most importantly, we need to realise that practicing the spiritual disciplines -both personal and interpersonal -no matter how faithfully, consistently or specifically -does nothing to endear us to God. The gospel is not a message of what we must do for God in order to overcome the offense of our sins and become acceptable to Him, rather it is a message of what God has done for us in Jesus Christ in order to bring us to Himself. Once a believer accepts the message of the gospel, and begins to live righteously and is indwelled by the Holy Spirit, the spiritual disciplines become the means by which he enjoys God and is transformed more into conformity with Christ.
It is by means of the spiritual disciplines that believers in the gospel of Jesus Christ focus on the Person and work of Jesus. Through them, he learns from, looks upon, and enjoys who Jesus is and what He has done for him and for sinners. By means of the spiritual disciplines, we find the truth of the gospel restoring our souls. As we engage in the spiritual disciplines given by God in the Scripture, we should continually sense our need for Christ and discover that the infinite supply of grace and mercy is to be found by faith in Jesus Christ alone.
Beloved, as you continue in the spiritual disciplines today and to worship God in the spirit and in truth, the heavens over you will open and the prosperity and pleasures of God will be yours, in the name of Jesus.
