TOPIC - God of Pleasant Surprises (I)
BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Job 41-42; Acts 16:22-40
FIRE SCRIPTURE: John 5:1-9
MEMORY VERSE: “When the LORD turned again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that dream.” – Psalms 126:1

The MESSAGE:
There were several wonderful things God did in the Bible. Some came after praying and waiting patiently for them with the spirit of expectancy. Yet there were so many others that God did for people as pleasant surprises. We serve the God of pleasant surprises. When the disciples of Jesus gathered in the Upper Room and were praying, they had a promise and were expecting the coming as well as enduement of power by the Holy Spirit. So when the Holy Spirit came on the Day of Pentecost and filled them, their expectation was fulfilled, but it was not a surprise that the Holy Spirit came because the Master had promised them and they knew He would fulfil His word.
However, for the man who had been by the Pool of Bethesda for thirty eight years but got none to help him into the pool when God’s angel came to stir the water, it was a pleasant surprise when the help he had sought to no avail for over three decades came to him unsolicited. He had cried out to men to help him but no one did. That is why when Jesus asked him if he would like to be made whole, all he could answer was, “I have no man.” That was the summary of his experience so far at the pool. If he had a man to help him, perhaps he would not have been in his helpless state. That was what occupied his subconscious. He was not prepared for a pleasant surprise. He did not know that God could turn his story around for good and seek out a man that needed help and rescue him without being invited.
It was a pleasant surprise because the man did not even know Jesus or what He could do for him. It was a pleasant surprise because in the same place for thirty eight years no one had offered to help him though he begged them to. It was a pleasant surprise because the only method or means by which the man knew he could be healed was to be rushed into the water by a helper once the angel stirred it. However, the Reverser of the irreversible cannot be limited to a method in achieving His purpose. The man never had to enter into the pool. He was not touched by the water that had healed multitude of invalids and sick folks. Jesus only said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.” The man was made whole instantly and he walked. That was a pleasant surprise to the man and everyone who witnessed the miracle of Jesus.
Beloved, are you contending with a challenge that has defiled solution? Have human beings refused to help you in your situation? Cry to the God of pleasant surprises to appear in your situation. He appeared to Hagar when Ishmael was going to die of hunger and thirst. He provided water as a pleasant surprise. He showed up as the hopeless and helpless widow of Nain was going to bury her only son. Amidst mourning and wailing, Jesus interrupted the funeral and raised the son to life. The funeral procession never got to the burial ground. They all went back home with the son alive, jubilating and praising God. It was a pleasant surprise to the people of Nain and the widow who had taught that all hope was lost. The God of pleasant surprises will visit you, in Jesus’ mighty name.

  7. Father, single me out for Your life-changing and destiny-fulfilling visitation today, in the name of Jesus.
