TOPIC - THE RENEGADE
Read: 1 Samuel 2:22-25
[22]Now Eli was very old, and heard all that his sons did unto all Israel; and how they lay with the women that assembled at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
[23]And he said unto them, Why do ye such things? for I hear of your evil dealings by all this people.[24]Nay, my sons; for it is no good report that I hear: ye make the LORD'S people to transgress.[25]If one man sin against another, the judge shall judge him: but if a man sin against the LORD, who shall intreat for him? Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto the voice of their father, because the LORD would slay them.
MEMORISE:
Now Eli was very old; and he heard everything his sons did to all Israel, and how they lay with the women who assembled at the door of the tabernacle of meeting_ (1 Samuel 2:22).*
EXPOSITION
The Greek Philosopher, Plato, asserted “The first and best victory is to conquer self.” The sons’ of Eli became Balia children because, they could not conquer self. Their inner drives became sinful acts because, they were not properly tamed. They polluted the sanctuary of Israel, rubbished the holy sacrifice and tarnished the reputation and the profession of their father.
Oswald Sanders says without self-discipline, a leader’s other gifts, however great, will never realise their maximum potential. The lawless are not knowledgeable people, who ought to think well, but did not because of their reckless living. They have no self-discipline at all. They hurt their neighbours anyhow. They are incorrigible. Hophni and Phinehas were in this camp. They suppose to sit down, think about their horrible characters and make a change. That is, such battle supposed to be won from within of them, and it will be won outside. Being a renegade, if not checked in time, can kill. It rubbished Eli’s character and his sons’ and later led to their death.
PRAYER POINTS
1. God remove the Spirit of waywardness from my children.
2. Lord do not allow evil Spirit to abort my life.
3. Spirit that destroys is the spirit of sinfulness, depart from my wife, children and myself in Jesus name amen.
