TOPIC - DON’T BE A SORROWFUL CHILD
Read: 2 Samuel 15:30
[30]And David went up by the ascent of mount Olivet, and wept as he went up, and had his head covered, and he went barefoot: and all the people that was with him covered every man his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up.
MEMORISE: _Honor your father and your mother that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you_ (Exodus 20:12).
EXPOSITION
Absalom definitely represents the league of bastards, who cause their parents heartache *(cf. Prov. 30:11,17).* Series of allegations stood on his neck: hatred, vengefulness, disrespect, rebellion, illegal occupation, murder, etc. The worse was his threat against his own father’s kingdom and his personality, to the effect that David wept sore.
Seriously, youths have a lot of lessons to learn from Absalom, if their lives would make meanings. Disrespect to parents, which seems like a commonplace today, is a grievous thing before God. Why? Parents represent God in the affairs of their children. Many of David’s sorrows were results of a single boy’s misbehaviour: in the case of his son, Amnon’s gruesome murder (2 Sam. 13:28,29), and that of open abuse of his concubine (2 Sam. 16:22). Now he was made a laughing stock in the city to the extent of being made to self-exile himself by the same foolish son *(2 Sam. 15:30).
Some people want to rule at all cost, even when they are yet to acquire the prerequisite relevant experiences of life. What of those who want to get wealth at all cost, going into money rituals, yahoo plus and other fraudulent practices, armed banditry, political thuggery, and the likes? Nevertheless, little do they know, or maybe they don’t want to admit that nemesis catches up with those who know how to cheat *(2 Sam. 18:15-17).
Countless youths die untimely from time to time, because of disregard for elders. Youths, or the upcoming ones, in particular, want to jump protocols in almost everything and everywhere. Most of them are always in a hurry to get anything, regardless of whoever is hurt. This might be partly due to the exuberant characteristics of youthfulness. However, this should be tempered with the presence of the Holy Spirit *(Rom. 13:13; 1 Cor. 10:31; Phil. 2:3; Col. 3:23).* Let us do the work that would earn us praise, honour, blessings, and long life. Delay is not denial. Your life will not end in chaos.
PRAYER POINTS
1. Oh Lord, forgive me, where I have ever caused my parents or any elderly one to weep or be sorrowful, and help me to watch my ways, henceforth.
2. Father, destroy the spirit/tendency of ‘Grab it at all cost’ in our youths.
3. Pray for those the devil has taken captive into prostitution, wasting away their lives, that God should open their eyes to see their ends and make U-turn, now.
