II. THE FINAL JUDGMENT OF SATAN (Revelation 19:11-21; 20:1-15)
In hell, God is going to punish Satan and all his collaborators (angelic human), through all eternity. It will be a place with indescribable sufferings.
A. SATAN IS DOOMED (19:11-21; 20:1-3)
He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound bound him for a thousand years (20:2).
i. 19:11-16: The King of kings and Lord of lords would gloriously return with His army of the saints who would have been with Him in the sky during the 7-years period of the Marriage Supper of the Lamb and the soldier-like angelic hosts to execute judgment on Satan and his cohorts.
ii. vv. 17-19: Devil and his agents are 'goats'. Goats are known to be stubborn animals. If not, why would the beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies still mobilise to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army? (cf. 1 Pet. 5:8)
iii. vv. 20-21: Who can withstand the Lord of Hosts? The Anti-Christ and the false prophet shall be decisively judged by the Consuming Fire (Heb. 12:29).
iv. 20:1-3: The dragon, the ancient serpent, Satan, who has been troubling man cannot escape God's axe of judgment. He shall be bound for 1000 years for peace to reign in the Millennial Reign of Christ, upon the surface of the earth. God has prepared bottomless pit and... great chain for Satan (v. 1). Don't align with him in any way!
B. SOME FEATURES OF HIS JUDGMENT (20:1-15)
The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever (v. 10).
i. As tough as Satan is, an angel, shall apprehend him!
ii. He shall be bound with a chain by an angel, thrown to the dark bottomless pit where his cohorts are (cf. Jude 1:6).
iii. A seal shall be placed upon him, so as to prevent him from conversing with his agents, and to silence him for 1000 years, making the Millennial Reign of Christ with His saints on earth.
iv. He shall be briefly released after the 1000-years reign. One would expect that humanity speaking, he should have mellowed, but surprisingly, he would still go ahead to conspire against God, and would sponsor a rebellious group leading to war. But he would be judged in the hell fire (20:7-10).
v. Satan and his angels with the unbelievers shall be tortured day and night forever (Matt. 25:46). Even the insects there will never die (Mk. 9:44; Isa. 66:24). That points out the the enormity of the sorrow in hell eternally.
vi. The white throne judgment would then follow (20:11-15) in which the dead would be judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books (v. 12; cf. 2 Cor. 5:10,11). It is going to be a dreadful day.
vi. If the archenemy of man (Satan) will not be left out in God's eternal judgment, why are we still blaming him for what we did, today? Leave him out of your life. Live holy in line with Christ's standard. God's has taken care of the devil from eternity. But the onus is on you to work out your salvation till eternity. Don't mess up.
LESSONS DERIVED
1. The fact that Christ will soon come to judge the world and cage Satan, his agents and his people eternally, calls for the pursuit of Christ's holiness on our part (2 Pet. 3:7-14).
2. God did not create hell fire for man but for Satan and his angels/agents. The choice is yours ---- heaven, or hell. But choose Christ to make heaven.
QUESTIONS
1. Describe the types of divine judgment that would come upon the earth.
2. Having understood the inglorious end awaiting Satan and his agents, who should we fear --- God (Christ) or Satan?
SUGGESTED ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS
ANSWER TO QUESTION 1:
i. Refer to division I and II.
ii. The divine judgment that would come upon the earth are:
a. Individual judgment: Judgment of the believer's works, and the consequent rewards.
b. Judgment of the nations: The separation of sheep from goats; sheep on the right, and goats on the left hand.
c. Judgment of Satan: This is when our archenemy and his agents would be banished in the lake of fire for eternal damnation.
iii. Therefore, we ought to check and judge ourselves, before the day of the Lord (2 Cor. 13:5), when every hidden thought and act of man shall be revealed for the final judgment and reward, accordingly.
ANSWER TO QUESTION 2.
i. Since God, the creator of heaven and earth, will not allow Satan and his agents to be spared from the eternal doom, we must do everything possible to fear, obey and hold unto Jesus who owns all the power and authority to judge and reward everyone accordingly.
ii. Satanic activities will come to an end, but Jesus reigns forever. Accept Jesus today, because He is the only confidence we have.
iii. Never should we fear the devil and his activities any longer. He was defeated from eternity. His defeat was sealed at Calvary. And, he would soon be permanently banished to the hell meant for him and his cohorts, soonest. Why should this toothless lion be feared, then!?
iv. Nevertheless, only those who have accepted the Lordship of Jesus can look at the devil in the face and tell him, "Damn you. You have been defeated by Master Jesus, and I have therefore defeated you, because I and Him are one. So, get lost!"
LIFE APPLICATION
Daniel Webster, who was one-time secretary of state under President Fillmore of America, was once dining with 20 men at the Astor House in New York. Unusually reserved and detached from the course of conversation, he sank into a daydream. In order to draw him out, one of the men asked him this rather unusual question for a dinner table: "Mr. Webster, will you tell me what, was the most important thought that ever occupied your mind?"
Webster passed his hand over his forehead and said in a low tone to the one next to him, "Is there anyone here who does not know me?"
"No, said the man," all are yours
Then Webster said aloud so that all could hear, "The most important thought that ever occupied my mind was that of my individual responsibility to God." He discoursed upon this theme for 20 minutes, and then rode from the table and retired to his room.
What is that occupies your mind? Do you ever think so seriously about the Second Coming of Christ to judge the whole universe? Whether or not you set it before you always, and live accordingly, in expectation of it, it would come like a thief in the night. Why not do the right thing now to avoid facing the wrath of the Lion of the Tribe of Judah on that Day. Accept Jesus as your personal Lord and Saviour, NOW!
CONCLUSION
To God be the glory as we come to the tenth lesson in this Sunday school series. It has been so refreshing as we went through a two-week study of what the final judgment is, and how it would be. Jesus is coming to judge this world. Individuals as well as nations would stand before Him to receive judgment according to what we have all done in the body. Even Satan would not escape judgment. He would be given his due --- eternal torment in hell, with everyone and everything that align with him. The implication is that we should live our lives to glorify Christ alone. Also, we should stop fearing the devil. Instead, we should, with due respect for the King of kings and Lord, go all out to expose and destroy his works, in the power of the Holy Spirit, as we preach His Word (evangelism, missions and discipleship) with power. May we not be found wanting. Amen.
