TOPIC - MAKING A GOOD NAME
Read: Ecclesiastes 7:1-10
MEMORISE: _A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, Loving favor rather than silver and gold_ (Proverbs 22:1).
EXPOSITION
The context of a man is not enough to form a good name. It takes the good context and good character to make a good name. Many people carefully select names that have good contexts but are very careless about good character and good works that constitute a very vital part of attaining good name. A man’s good work produces good report about, and good name for him.
A good name is the consolidation of good context and good character or attitude of anybody. Judas Iscariot is a name good context, but the character of the bearer negated the name to the extent that hardly would anybody want to be addressed by that name today. The name Judas in Hebrew means _The Praised One,_ and Iscariot means _A Man from Kerioth._ However, the name has become synonymous today with being a traitor, because ‘apostle’ Judas-Iscariot betrayed Jesus.
What is your name? How are you character and works? What are those reports about your person and character, both divine and human, that are actually not giving you the kind of name God would be pleased with or that you would want to be mentioned in the public?
To be adjudged one with a godly name and character by both heaven and humans, the name compatible with the good context of your name, you must have been born again. Only Christ can give you victory over temptations that can soil your garment *(Rom. 6:1ff).* Then, make it a regular habit to be learning at the feet of Christ, both personally and corporately (with fellow Christians). And receive the grace by His Spirit to be living the life of Christ (cf. 2 Cor. 5:17).
PRAYER POINTS
1. Separate me, Lord, from the things that can hinder me from attaining good name, in Jesus’ name.
2. Pray that God should make our church and national leaders to be more conscious of making good names and leaving godly legacies behind, than amassing unnecessary wealth.
3. O Lord, restore the lost good name and glory of our nation.
