“I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in
him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do
nothing”
John 15: 5.
Webster’s
Dictionary defines ‘abide’ as to endure without yielding, to bear
patiently, to accept without objection, to remain stable or fixed in a
state, to continue in a place. So, to abide in Christ is to remain and
continue in, to live and dwell in Christ. If you are outside of Christ,
you are fruitless and already a prey to the devil.
Jesus is the vine,
we are the branches and we can only live through the vine. Fruitfulness
and nourishment are derived from the vine. Abiding in Christ is just
another name for intimacy with Christ. He wants to express His life
through you, which comes through your attachment to Him.If
your prayer life is just a matter of shooting up occasionally as
emergencies arise, you are missing this divine intimacy.
If you just
have your devotions in the morning as a matter of routine and not to
seek God’s face afresh, you do not understand what it means to abide in
Christ. When you dwell in God’s presence at all times; you won’t take a
wrong step. You will never get involved in ridiculous activities because
God in whom you abide will guide you always. When He guides, you are
sure of perfection and excellence.
