TOPIC - THE SCRIPTURE OR CULTURE?
Read: 2 Timothy 3:16,17
MEMORISE: All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16).
EXPOSITION
There is no gainsaying in the fact that the BIBLE (Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth) remains the full and final authority of and for all things. Despite being very old (in fact, one of the oldest), yet, its information remains relevant and valid in the past, present and future (Psa. 119:105). Its truths are immutable and irresistible. Whoever tries to fault the validity engages in mere ill-informed brainstorming and futile academic confusion! Napoleon Bonaparte, leader of the French revolution of 19th century commented that the Bible is so powerful that it reaches where it is not wanted! In other words, it is an indestructible Book. A very prominent president of America, Abraham Lincoln also said it is impossible to govern the world without God and Bible.
However, as fantastic as these sterling qualities of the Bible are, do we apply and appropriate its principles and practices? Have we not been shaking where we need to uphold the scriptures? Where and when our culture, tradition and practices negate the scriptures, which we do subjugate? In our marriage, burial, christening and other celebrations, are we firm about saying strictly by the holy commands in the scripture? A lot of people have argued that the Bible does not in any way contradict culture. If this argument is true, why the lop-sidedness in our dealing with scripture when we want to uphold culture?
Without any bit of doubt, a lot of stances can be spotted, where culture and Scripture go on parallel lines. As a Bible-based believer, you are to jettison any cultural belief or practice that contradicts the Bible. You should have no issue with the ones that go along with the Bible. In all matters that bother on our lives and living, we must aspire to cast total aspersion on things that can make us disobey the rules of the Living Word.
PRAYER POINTS
1. Lord, help me never to let anything stand in between myself and the doing of Your Word, whatever be the case.
2. Lord, help us to jettison those cultural practices that are at variance with Your Word, for our own good.
3. Lord, deliver Your Church from the unnecessary infiltration of the ungodly foreign culture bastardising the biblical values and practices.
