TOPIC: MARTHA’S MINISTRY
Read: Luke 10:38-42
MEMORISE: And Jesus answered and said to her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things (Luke 10:41).
EXPOSITION
Many a times, you are cautioned, not necessarily for doing a particular wrong thing but for its wrong timing. God is a God of priority and this reflected even during His works of creation in Genesis. There are lots of good in certain activities we engage in. some of these are possibly for our immediate comfort or others’ welfare. There is nothing absolutely bad in all these.
However, the real issue with these is their timing. The question remain: Are those activities rightly timed? Are/were they what we should have done at that time? (Eccl. 3:1ff) God sent His only begotten Son to the world in due time (Gal. 4:4), and everything Jesus did while on earth was timely (Joh. 4:34; 9:4). He never misplaced His priorities.
These is a lot of good in our welfare packages for church members–the visitation to the casual worshipper, ushering of new comers in and ministering to the needs of the saints, etc. All these are okay, but remain rubbish, if they are used either directly or indirectly to replace the ministry of the WORD (Acts 6:4).
Martha’s (hospitality and caring) ministry is needed in the church but can be misappropriated if unchecked. The woman tries to impress Jesus with all endless chores in other to provide welfare the Great Visitor. However, Jesus cherishes people who give more rapt attention to His Word than caring for His immediate needs. We can learn a lot here: always out first thing first, and then your effort will be appreciated.
Receive the spirit to prioritize God’s priorities today and always.
PRAYER POINTS
1. Lord, help me to give the attention You required to Your things.
2. Lord, help me to do the right things at the right times that would glorify You in every way.
3. Lord, open our eyes to every way the devil is trying to becloud the Church with meaningless activities, and help us to overcome him.
