TOPIC: SERVING IN EVERY SEASON
Read: Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
1 To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
2 A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
3 A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
4 A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
5 A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
6 A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
7 A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
8 A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.
MEMORISE: _To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven_ (Ecclesiastes 3:1).
EXPOSITION
There are seasons in our lives; a time for everything *(Eccl. 3:1).* While in school, we worry over exams. At work, we are concerned about our career progression. Then, we fret over meeting Mr. Right and Mrs. Right. After settling down, we fuss over raising our children. After retirement, we want to enjoy our golden years, but ill health may plague us.
In every phase of our lives, we meet different challenges. This is a fact of life, no matter who we are or what we do. The crux of Christian life is whether we allow them to affect our service to God, or not. Have we given excuses such as these?
I can’t go to church this month; I have to study for my final exam.
I can’t serve as a Sunday school teacher; I have a backlog of work to do.
I can’t come early for worship service; I always sleep late on Saturdays as it is full of social functions.
I can’t go out and visit the sick or elderly members; my kids exhaust me completely.
I have worked so hard my whole life, it is time for me to rest while others work.
Amidst the daily hustle and bustle of life, we can make our service to God count. Prioritise Him; don’t leave Him the leftovers of our time God is gracious to us; yet sometimes we allow His blessings to impede our service. He blesses us with a good tertiary education, but we use our studies as an excuse to shrink services. He gives us a fantastic job, but we let work overwhelm our lives. He gives us a beautiful family, but we allow them to rearrange our priorities. He blesses us with good health, but we side-line Him in our pursuit of leisure.
The way out : _Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord_ (1 Cor. 15:58). And _I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service_ (Rom. 12:1).
PRAYER POINTS
1. Lord, help me to always discern Your timing for my life and endeavours.
2. Lord, I want to serve You the way You desire; please, help me, in Jesus’ name.
3. Pray for as many as have the calling of God for full-time ministry upon their lives that they would not be stubborn as regards the calling.
