TOPIC: WHO IS YOUR FRIEND? (II)
Read: 1 Kings 12:1-11
1 And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king.
2 And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it, (for he was fled from the presence of king Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt;)
3 That they sent and called him. And Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came, and spake unto Rehoboam, saying,
4 Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.
5 And he said unto them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed.
6 And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men, that stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, and said, How do ye advise that I may answer this people?
7 And they spake unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day, and wilt serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever.
8 But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him:
9 And he said unto them, What counsel give ye that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which thy father did put upon us lighter?
10 And the young men that were grown up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou speak unto this people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father's loins.
11 And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father hath chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
MEMORISE:
Then the young men who had grown up with him spoke to him, saying, "Thus you should speak to this people who have spoken to you, saying, 'Your father made our yoke heavy, but you make it lighter on us' thus you shall say to them: 'My little finger shall be thicker than my father's waist!’” (1 Kings 12:10).
EXPOSITION
You must have studied the text this morning, how foolish Rehoboam, Solomon’s son and successor ruined his royalty prematurely! That is what negative friends can do to unsuspecting ones. We are able to see addictive and subtractive friends in our devotional study yesterday.
Are you an additive or a subtractive friend?
Let us now consider multiplicative friends. These are friends who make you twice you were originally in both material and immaterial ways. Their association with you has positive multiplier effects. Though, there are some negative multipliers but we look at positive ones here.
You were used to reading two hours per day. There is this friend of yours, whose association is now making you to study 4 or 5 hour per day! Such friends in the areas of academics can be kept. Praying for one hour daily used to be a huge success and exploit for you, but when you met this brother/sister, your one hour in prayer is doubled. Why not keep the friendship? Reader, do you also serve as a positive multiplier to your friend(s)?
The last type of friends are the divisive ones. These are dangerous friends who cause rancor, disaffection and chaos in lives, families, ministries, churches or businesses. In fact, they may call themselves “friends” but they are enemies in disguise! You should avoid such like poison! They divide family, the church, business and everything divisible! Women must watch out for these evil ones who break homes and later take advantage of the unsuspecting wives. May you not fall prey, in Jesus’ name.
Finally, he who has Christ the best Friend is under divide guidance to discern who to be friend with.
PRAYER POINTS
1. Lord, send away evil friends (enemies) from my life, family, business, ministry, etc., Jesus’ name.
2. Lord, connect me with friends who would help me to get to where You want me in every respect.
3. Lord, empower Christian umbrella bodies, such as CAN, PFN, CPFN, OAIC, etc., to serve more as instruments of godly unity among churches and Christians in the nation.
